A WAY TO DISCONNECT AND CONNECT, 2017
Text by Laura Stein
When I look at Cristian’s photographs, I’m drawn in by the loveliness of quiet and colour. I slow down to take in the delicate and brittle tones, the reverent stillness of the images. The terrain is both familiar and unfamiliar and I want to continue looking, despite the feeling that as I get deeper in, there will be heartache.
In these images, I feel Cristian’s presence keenly, as if he is standing next to me, his love for these people and places, his respect, but also a knowing sadness, hanging in the air. He is letting us travel and contemplate with him, showing us a deeply felt and fully considered world, and we are lucky to do it.
We roam together over misty roads, curving beaches, icy fields where the weather is always cool — mid-winter, early fall, late afternoon. The locations and landscapes are beautiful, but hard. And despite the inhospitable land, things grow and people live. There is resilience and resistance. Defiance. I’m-still-here. Cristian shows us a world that endures.
An abandoned gas pump. A makeshift office. A bedroom set, exposed to the elements, recedes into the tall grasses but for the pink chair, the jolt of colour reminding us of the peculiarity of human choice. We come upon these archeological sites and wonder, Did the people give up or simply move on? They endured for a time. The evidence remains.
There are portraits here, chance encounters. The people we meet have also weathered something. They are tough and tenacious. A man poses with his greyhound, a rescue dog, the layered eras of industry behind them. Both feel like old souls who have found each other. Another man, seasoned and smiling, sits among his rabbits. A runner’s grit. A surfer’s resolve. Two young boys, emerge from the trees, scratched and sweaty, challenging us to say anything.
The trees too, have endured. Singular but standing tall, the dead pine on the beach defies its green and growing cohort. It is probably a matter of time before nature takes it down, but for now, it is heroic.
This is the source of our heartache. Throughout this journey, Cristian reminds us of what we know but try to tamp down in our busy lives — that ultimately we are doomed. But he also shows us that there is beauty and wonder in our resistance — the book a chronicle of that effort and our capacity to live and love despite the forces working against us.
